All Hail The Power of Jesus Name

Often called the “National Anthem of Christendom,” “All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name” is one of the most recognizable hymns ever published. According to Hymnary.org, it’s been published in over 3,200 hymnals! Who knew there was even that many hymnals?!

Verse 1
All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the royal diadem
And crown Him Lord of all
Bring forth the royal dia - dem
And crown Him Lo - rd of all

This hymn takes us on a journey of revelation to response, the essence of Biblical worship. The first verse establishes just how powerful, majestic, and full of glory and splendor Jesus the King truly is. So much so that “…Let Angels prostrate fall…”!

Verse 2
Ye chosen seed of Israel's race
Ye ransomed from the fall
Hail Him who saves you by His grace
And crown Him Lord of all
Hail Him who by His grace
And crown Him Lo - rd of all

In verse two, the writers go further, showing us that while the whole of Heaven falls prostrate in worship, we too must do likewise. “…Hail Him who saved us by His grace…”

Verse 3
Let ev'ry kindred ev'ry tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To Him all majest - y a - scribe
And crown Him Lord of all
To Him all maje - sty a - scribe
And crown Him Lo - rd of all

“Let every kindred, every tribe, on this terrestrial ball, To Him all majesty ascribe…” My brother and his family spent 12 years on the mission field in Indonesia. While there, he was part of a team that discovered people groups never before documented or recognized – even by the surrounding tribes. With that knowledge now, go back and re-read the lyrics of verse 3. Every family and every tribe in the entire globe is to ascribe majesty to Jesus, the Son of God! And still, 2,000 years since the birth of Christ, we’re discovering people who have not yet been reached by any outside human contact.

Consider the true story of missionary E.P. Scott and how God prompted him to visit a remote village of a dangerous tribe in India. Expecting to die when surrounded on his first encounter in the early 1800s, he began to sing with his eyes closed, “All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name.” When he opened his eyes, he found this savage group of warriors with tears in their eyes and their spears no longer pointed at his heart.

Verse 4
O that with yonder sacred throng
We at His feet may fall
We'll join the ever - last - ing song
And crown Him Lord of all
We'll join the ever - lasting song
And crown Him Lo - rd of all

Finally, we sing, “O that with yonder sacred throng, we at His feet may fall, we’ll join the everlasting song…” Oh, to one day join the hosts of heavenly voices and sing! Have you thought about what that will be like?

When we gather to worship on Sundays, we join with the people we see in the room and churches all over the globe and with the multitude in Heaven as described in Revelation 19! What a sound that must be to His ears!
